PORTOLIO PREP

GRADES 9-12

CREATE AN ART PORTFOLIO FOR COLLEGE

This program helps students create a visually compelling art portfolio that can be used to apply to an art school or program, or a smaller portfolio “supplement” for regular school applications. Supplemental portfolios help a student stand out from the crowd of applicants and show dedication and a wider range of interests and abilities.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are looking for regular Adult Classes (ages 14 and up), click HERE

JUNIORS / SENIORS: Rising seniors (11th graders in Spring/Summer quarters) are not admitted to the Portfolio Prep program without a consultation first. With only a few months until their deadline, it is almost impossible for these students to create a robust portfolio by their due date. Creating strong artwork takes a long time. To give you an example, a typical student coming once a week will only create about 4 artworks in a year. If a rising senior already has strong artwork in hand, has strong natural abilities and speed, and comes 3-4 classes a week, it may be possible.... Please arrange for a consultation HERE.

+ CLASS INFO

Portfolio Prep classes are designed to provide a structured, yet friendly environment where students can have fun while learning foundational concepts. Teachers help students hone drawing and painting skills and place strong emphasis on accurate observation of proportion, shape, tonal value and color. Beyond developing technical mastery, students will learn new tools to brainstorm ideas and to create unique, and expressive artwork. The ultimate goal is to create a portfolio of visually compelling artwork that showcases the student's personality, interests and passions with a diversity of subject matter and a variety of techniques and materials.

TEENS CAN EXPLORE THE FOLLOWING & MORE:

  • Still Life

  • Portrait

  • Animal

  • Landscape

  • Imaginative Realism

  • Surrealism

COMPETITIONS: In addition to helping teens build a strong body of work for their portfolio, the teacher will help students tailor certain projects for art competitions. Awards add to a student's list of accomplishments:

  • Scholastic Art Awards,

  • Junior Duck Stamp Contest,

  • State Fish Contest,

  • The Congressional Art Competition,

  • and the prestigious Da Vinci Initiative Awards presented by the Art Renewal Center

STUDENT ART SHOW: One of the benefits of your child taking classes at Zoll Studio is that they can enter their work into our annual Student and Faculty Exhibit. This formal exhibit of over 600 artworks is attended by hundreds of visitors in the 3-day opening reception. This can be a shining moment for a budding artist. They can celebrate with pride what they have achieved and invite friends and family to see their work hung in a professional exhibit. Students interested in a career or side business in art can get a taste for the transactional details of selling art.

+ WHAT IS A PORTFOLIO & WHY DO I NEED IT?

If applying to an art school (visual arts program), an art portfolio is required of all applicants. It consists of 15-20 of your strongest artwork pieces. Colleges like to see about 40% of the work done from observation, a mix of techniques, and some narrative or imaginative work expressing your personality, passions and interests. The whole portfolio is "graded" by the following criteria: technical mastery, variety & versatility, and unique style & personality. If you are in the Portfolio Program, your instructor will help guide you as you go to ensure that all of the criteria are met.

WHAT IS A SUPPLEMENTAL PORTFOLIO?: It is important to note that you don't need to go to an art school to benefit from an art portfolio. Perhaps you are more interested in science. Nevertheless, most colleges now accept art portfolios as a supplement to regular applications. Top colleges today are fiercely competitive, and any advantage should be taken. Whether you plan to go into art or not, an art portfolio presented visually can make a strong first impression. An art portfolio demonstrates artistic abilities, but also shows dedication, patience, and the ability to think creatively- all attributes that make an applicant stand out from the crowd. Most schools only require 10 pieces in a supplemental art portfolio.

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE! I can't stress enough how important it is for you to start working on your portfolio as early as possible. Learning art concepts and honing skills takes more time than you think. To give you an idea of the commitment involved, let's take a Freshman who starts at the beginning of the year. If they only come once a week, the average number of projects they might complete in a given year is only 4, with almost no abscences. This would result in only 17 portfolio pieces by their senior year applicaton deadline. The required number of pieces in art portfolio is 15-20 (If doing a supplemental portfolio, most colleges expect at least 10). Because of family vacations, abscences that are not made up, or starting the process late (as a junior or senior), many students find they need to take more than one class a week to complete the required number of portfolio pieces.

PORTFOLIO PHOTOGRAPHY: All student artwork will be professionally photographed so that the best version of each piece can be presented in their portfolio.

+ STUDIO POLICIES

MAKE UPS

From our years of teaching teen classes, we have observed that students perform the best and are most successful in a consistent learning environment. For your child to get the most out of their experience, we strongly encourage consistent attendance to their regularly scheduled class(es).

1) I understand that make-up classes are offered as a courtesy only. Only one make-up session will be allowed per month for absences due to personal reasons. Make up classes must be completed by the end of each academic month. The "academic month" starts on the day of enrollment and ends 30 days later. So, for example, if your child starts on the 25th of the month, they must arrange to make up any missed classes by the 25th of the next month or within 30 days.

2) There will be no make-up session if written notification via email is not provided prior to absence.

3) Absences cannot be credited to the next month’s tuition.

4) Eligible make-ups are valid while you are enrolled. All unused make-ups expire when you withdraw and are not carried over upon re-enrollment.

5) Rescheduled/make up classes cannot be replaced. We do not reschedule make up classes.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

1) Classes will begin and end promptly at the scheduled times. Please be punctual. Parents are required to drop off and pick up the student promptly at the beginning and at the end of class.

2) If the student is waiting for pickup in the lobby, they are required to let the teacher know when their ride gets there before leaving.

CODED ACCESS ENTRY

For the safety of your child, Zoll Studio has installed entrance doors with coded access. You and your child will be given the access code when you enroll. You are responsible for knowing this code to enter and may not give this code to anyone else.

PHOTOS

I hereby give Zoll Studio, LLC permission to use photographs of my child(ren) and artworks for future promotional purposes. I understand that my child(rens) name(s) will NOT be used to identify them in a photo at any time in any publication without my permission. Any children found to be disruptive to the program or teachers may be dismissed from the session without refund.

PAYMENTS AND FEES

1) If tuition is not received PRIOR to the start of class, the student’s place cannot be guaranteed. Sessions are paid for by the academic month (not the day).

2) Tuition is not transferable from one session or month to another due to poor attendance or missed classes.

3) There are no refunds for missed classes, or for dismissal due to discipline problems.
